About Q-PLANET

Neutral atoms are a promising platform for quantum computing, sensing and communication.

They rely on precisely controlled atoms and specialized components that operate at wavelengths and performance levels not served by conventional semiconductor supply chains.

Q-PLANET is creating the foundations of a European industrial pilot line dedicated to these technologies. The project brings together complementary expertise in photonics, atom chips, vapor cells, electronics, packaging, testing and industrialization.

The first Specific Grant Agreement, running from May 2026 to April 2029, focuses on developing and validating the technologies, processes and common methodologies required for scalable and reliable quantum chip production.

What is a pilot line?

A bridge between research and industrial production

A pilot line provides the shared processes, equipment, design rules, quality controls and manufacturing know-how needed to turn promising technologies into repeatable products and services.

For Q-PLANET, this means connecting design, fabrication, assembly, control and characterization capabilities across Europe so that neutral-atom quantum components can be developed and validated in a more coordinated and industrially relevant environment.

Why neutral atoms?

One platform, three quantum application areas

Quantum computing – programmable arrays of neutral atoms can support scalable quantum processors.

Quantum sensing – atomic systems enable highly precise measurements for timing, navigation, inertial sensing and field detection.

Quantum communication – atomic components can support quantum memories, repeaters and secure network technologies.

European strategic relevance

Building capability and resilience in Europe

By developing critical components, process knowledge and testing capabilities in Europe, Q-PLANET aims to reduce strategic dependencies, retain key know-how and strengthen the European quantum supply chain.

The project also works in connection with the broader Chips for Europe Initiative, other pilot lines, competence centres and relevant European quantum initiatives.
